If you’ve ever gotten bored with what’s in your closet, you can start to create your own fashion designs. With shows such as ‘Project Runway’ becoming more popular, there are more things in the marketplace than ever before that will allow you to create a phenomenal amount of fashions that are better suited to your personality than what you can find on the racks of any department store.
Whether you want to embellish current outfits or create your own from scratch, there are 7 tips to creating great designs.
1. Learn To Sew
You can take classes at your local arts and crafts store or buy a few books. Once you can learn how to use a sewing machine, you can take fashion design to the next level and start using patterns to create shirts, dresses, skirts and so much more. After you’ve mastered the basics, you can start using mannequins for your fashion designing and even learning how to measure the body to make adjustments when you’re following a pattern. This will make it easier to adapt styles to your own body type.
2. Embellish Your Favorites
Start with a not so exciting shirt or pair of jeans and then find some great embellishments that will allow you to add your own creative spin to the fashions. This can be anything from patches to iron ons, rhinestones or even fabric ribbons. You can use multiple objects on a single piece of clothing to really jazz it up. You can also cut the fabric and weave in ribbon or sew in a patch to make it look more authentic.
3. Draw Your Designs Out First
It’s always best to have a certain idea in mind before you just start attaching beads and patches and ribbon to your clothing. Especially if you’re going to freehand draw something onto the fabric, make sure that you are comfortable drawing it over and over before you start using paint or something else that will be impossible for you to erase once you get started. After you’ve created the design you want, it will be easier to make it come to life on the fabric in front of you.
4. Start Simple
It’s noble to want to create your prom dress as the first thing that you design, however that can be a lot of work, especially if you’ve never sewn before. Instead, start with something simple, such as a scarf. Each time you create something, get a little more advanced. You can always use your earlier work in some of your future outfits, but this way you can make sure that you’ve mastered one skill before you tackle the next.
5. Recycle Your Fabrics
If you had a favorite pair of jeans or blouse that you no longer fit into, keep it around anyways. You can cut the fabric up and recycle it into one of your newest fashions. You may be able to keep the legs of the jeans for your next funky pair of jeans or use them as patches for a shirt that you’re designing. Fabric isn’t cheap, so if you can use some of the stuff you have, it will also make your fashion designing more affordable.
6. Create A Theme
You need some sort of theme when you get started. This can be a specific color theme or a certain look, whether it’s floral, country or even gothic. You can use ruffles, lace and much more. Just don’t use so many patterns and colors in one look that the look will become distracting. Explore the different colors and patterns to see which ones are the best on you.
7. Be Creative
This is your chance to create something no one has ever seen before. If you’ve ever wondered what plaid and lace would look like together, go for it. There are no rules in fashion designing as long as it looks great in the end. You may be able to create a whole new fashion trend just because you weren’t afraid to color outside the lines. Experiment with different textures and colors. The outcome may be a stunning new combination that everyone wants to be a part of.
